Caption: Fruit fly feeding. Macrophotograph of an adult male Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata) feeding on an apple. This fly is an important pest of hundreds of fruit trees and other plants. The fly larvae feed on the soft tissue in fruit, then emerge and pupate in the soil. Once hatched, the adult is highly motile. The fly originated in Mediterranean Europe, but it has now spread to Africa, South America and Western Australia. Magnification unknown.
