Caption: Fruit fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a fruit fly (Drosophila sp). One of the two multi-faceted compound eyes (brown and green, upper right) is seen. On the top of the head are the antennae (blue and brown), which consist of small, fleshy pads with bristle-like extensions called aristas. The tube-like proboscis on the end of the snout is used for ingesting food. Drosophila sp. flies are widely used in genetic experiments, particularly in mutation experiments, because they reproduce rapidly and because their genetic systems are well understood. Magnification: x40 at 6x6cm size.
