Caption: Mutant fruit fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a fruit fly (Drosophila sp.) with the "rough eye" mutation. The compound eyes (one seen, upper left), which are normally composed of many regularly-arranged, evenly-sized lenses, have failed to develop normally due to an induced genetic mutation. Drosophila sp. flies have been used for many years in genetic studies because they reproduce rapidly, and because their genetic systems are well understood. Magnification: x65 at 6x6cm size.
