Caption: Housefly eye. Image 2 of 6. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of facets on the eye of a common housefly (Musca domestica). Each of this fly's compound eyes comprises several thousand image-forming facets called ommatidia. Each of these is a simple eye which sends a signal to the fly's brain. The brain combines the thousands of images to form a mosaic view of the world. The image is not sharp but is excellent at detecting movement. Magnification: x1000 at 4x5 inch size. For a sequence showing this fly's eye at successively higher magnifications, see images Z340/501-506.
