Caption: Midge head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an unidentified midge. Midges are tiny flies that feed on the blood of animals. The 'bite' (actually an insertion of a needle-like proboscis) irritates and inflames the skin. Midges feed primarily in the evenings. The head, dominated by the large compound eyes (one seen, red), is covered in sensory hairs. Magnification: x120 at 6x7cm size.
