Caption: Fly eyes. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the simple eyes (ocelli) of a hover fly (family Syrphidae). There are three, forming a triangle (upper centre) between the much larger compound eyes (partially seen at left and right). The ocelli cannot focus, but detect differences in light intensity. The compound eye consists of many visual units, known as ommatidia. Each ommatidium consists of an outer cuticle covering a lens. The image seen by insects with compound eyes is thought to be a mosaic image, poorly focused but good at detecting movements. Magnification: x85 at 6x7cm size.
