Caption: Mutant fruit fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a mutant fruit fly (Drosophila sp.) with only one eye. The compound eyes normally occupy a large area on each side of the head. One small eye is seen at upper right, but the other side of the fly's head is eyeless. This is due to an induced genetic mutation. Drosophila sp. flies have been used for many years in genetic studies because they reproduce rapidly, and because their genetic systems are well understood. Magnification: x65 at 6x6cm size.
