Caption: Fruit fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a fruit fly (Drosophila sp). One of the two multi-faceted compound eyes (red) is seen. At the front of the head are fine antennae coated with bristle-like extensions called aristas. The snout (brown, lower right) contains a proboscis for ingesting food. Drosophila sp. flies are widely used in genetic research, particularly in mutation experiments, because they reproduce rapidly and because their genetic systems are well understood. Magnification unknown.
