Caption: Fruit fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. The abdomen of the fly is on the right and the head is on the left. On either side of the head are multi-faceted eyes (red). Under the head is the proboscis, which has sensory palps on either side. D. melanogaster is widely used in genetic experiments because it has a life cycle of 8-10 days and its genetic makeup is small and well understood, making it easy to manipulate in the laboratory.
