Caption: Fly proboscis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tip of the proboscis (snout) of a fly (order Diptera). Flies possess mouthparts adapted for piercing and sucking. Most feed on plant juices or suck the blood of mammals. The tip of the proboscis in some flies has these two spongy labella (pink), used to soak up liquids.
