Caption: Fly compound eye. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of lenses (rounded) and sensory hairs making up part of the surface of a compound eye from a hover fly (family Syrphidae). These lenses are called ommatidia. A compound eye is not very good at distinguishing detail, but it does allow the detection of tiny movements. The sensory hairs allow the fly to sense touch and to feel air movements.
