Caption: Feeding sandfly. Macrophotograph of a sandfly (Lutzomyia longipalpis) feeding on a human. The sandfly feeds on human blood and is a vector for leishmaniasis, a disease which causes breakdown of the tissues in humans. The fly carries the leishmania protozoan in its salivary glands and injects it into the human host as it feeds. Magnification unknown.
