Caption: Mosquito pupae. Macrophotograph of pupae of the mosquito Anopheles gambiae underwater, seen from above. The aquatic larvae of this mosquito pupate underwater, forming a hard cuticle around themselves as they develop into the adult stage. When the adults are fully formed, they begin to swallow air through the breathing tubes (seen end- on, silver/white ovals) that penetrate the water's surface. The pressure increases within each pupa, causing the cuticles to split and allowing the adults to emerge. A. gambiae females are the most important vector for the transmission of malaria to humans in Africa. Magnification unknown.
