Caption: Mosquito larvae. Macrophotograph of mosquito larvae (subfamily Culicinae) underwater. These are culicine mosquitoes; the larvae hang down from the water's surface (top) at an angle. These larvae are aquatic, hatching from eggs laid by the adult female on the surface of the water. They breathe through a siphon (tube) at the end of the abdomen and feed on protozoa and other minute organisms, which are wafted into the mouth. The adult mosquito emerges after a period of pupation. Magnification unknown.
