Caption: Mosquito wing surface. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the micro-structures on the surface of an unidentified mosquito (family Culicidae) wing. The hair-like structures (blue) aid flight and can be used to create sound, which may be used in courtship rituals. Mosquitoes beat their wings 300-500 times a second during flight, and can travel at a speed of up to 32 kilometres an hour. Several species are vectors for human diseases, including yellow fever and malaria. Magnification: x1500 at 6x7cm size.
