Caption

Mosquito. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a mosquito (family Culicidae). The mosquito's head is dominated by its large compound eyes (yellow), between which are two antennae (orange). The long thin proboscis (orange, curving down from head) is used to pierce the skin and suck the blood of an animal host. The body (red) is covered by the wings (brown). Mosquitoes have six long, jointed legs. Several mosquito species are vectors for human diseases, including malaria and yellow fever.
