Caption: Mosquito larva. Light micrograph of the head and upper body of a mosquito (family Culicidae) larva. The black tube running down centre is the larva's gut. The mosquito's larval stage lasts for between 1 to 2 weeks. During this time the larva lives underwater, feeding on algae and detritus. Magnification: x50 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
