Caption: Bee head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an unidentified bee (superfamily Apoidea). Its compound eye (orange, centre) and antennae (upper centre) are seen. On top of the head are three small bumps that are simple eyes or ocelli. They make up another visual sensory system, one that cannot focus but is very sensitive to variations in light intensity. Magnification: x28 at 6x7cm size.
