Caption: Female parasitoid wasp (Aphidius sp.), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This small wasp uses its ovipositor (rear of body, green, lower left) to inject an egg into an aphid. The developing wasp young (larva) feeds on and kills the aphid. The larva spins a cocoon and emerges as an adult around 15 days later. The wings (upper left) and six legs (lower right) are attached to the thorax (main body segment). The abdomen is to its left and the head to its right. The compound eyes (red) and the antennae (stalk-like sensory structures) dominate the head. Magnification: x12 at 6x7cm size.
