Caption: Hornet foot. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tip of a leg of a European hornet (Vespa crabro). The end of an insect leg consists of a final segment, which is called the tarsus. The tarsus itself has several segments, and here ends in a pretarsus that has two claws, and also a set of pulvilli (yellow), pads that help insects grip smooth surfaces. This hornet is the largest of the European wasps. Magnification: x59 when printed 10cm wide.
