Ant eye. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the compound eye of an ant. The eye consists of many rounded lenses known as ommatidia. Each ommatidium is a simple eye that sends a signal to the ant's brain. All the signals are combined by the brain to form a mosaic view of the world. The image seen is not very sharp but good at detecting movements.
