Caption: Luna moth (Actias luna) This large moth, native to eastern North America, has a wingspan of up to 15 centimetres. The adult luna moth does not eat, existing merely to reproduce. The caterpillar must therefore gain enough reserves to allow it to spin a cocoon, metamorphose into a moth, and survive for around a week; long enough to mate. After this time the moth dies.
