Caption: Mexican jumping bean moth larva. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Mexican jumping bean moth larva (Carpocapsa sp.) encased in the seed of a Mexican jumping bean shrub (Sebastiana sp.). The female moth lays her eggs in the immature ovaries of the shrub's flowers. When the flower is pollinated the eggs become trapped inside the seeds and the larvae start to develop, eating the innards of the seed. When exposed to light and heat the larva move inside the seed causing it to 'jump'. After several months the larva spins a cocoon inside the bean and starts its metamorphosis into a moth. Magnification: x22 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
