Caption: Squirrel flea antenna. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the antenna of a Squirrel flea (Orchopeas howardi howardi). A flea's maxillary palps (not seen) are often mistaken for antennae, but the true antennae (seen here) are minute and usually rest in grooves behind the eye for easy movement through the hair. Fleas are external parasites that may carry and transmit diseases.
