Caption: Starfish (Echinaster sp.) regenerating from a piece of arm. The large arm at lower left may have become severed from another starfish. The regenerative power of these animals is such that severed limbs can grow to produce a new animal, essentially a clone of the starfish which lost its arm. Starfish feed on molluscs and detritus. Photographed off the Reef Islands, Vanuatu.
