Caption: Largemouth bass. Historical artwork of a largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Largemouth basses are freshwater fishes found in the central USA. Their diet includes the eggs and young of other fish. This new species of fish was described by the eminent French zoologist Georges Cuvier (1769-1832) and his colleague, Valenciennes, in 1835. They called this fish the black bass (Huro nigricans).
