Caption: Chinook salmon. Chinook, or king, salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) leaping up a small waterfall in a river. The chinook salmon is born in a river in western North America and swims out into the Pacific Ocean to mature. After three or four years, it migrates back to the river of its birth to breed, often covering thousands of kilometres. It locates its home river using its excellent sense of smell. After breeding, it dies.
