Caption: Chevron barracuda. School of chevron barracuda, Sphyraena sp., some silhouetted against the sun. These fish congregate in schools numbering many thousands, seeking safety in numbers from predators such as tuna. The resulting wall of fast-moving silver and black stripes makes it difficult for a predator to focus on a single fish. Chevron barracuda are fast and voracious predators reaching lengths of over a metre. They have a large gape and sharp, grasping teeth. They inhabit tropical and subtropical coastal waters, and migrate in pursuit of schooling fish. Photographed off Palau Sipadan, Malaysia.
