Caption: Goosefish (Lophius americanus) camouflaged on the sea floor. This fish, also known as the monkfish or angler fish, is a lie-in-wait predator. It attracts its prey, usually other fish, by wiggling a lure (seen between eyes at centre). The lure is a highly modified part of its dorsal fin. Once a fish has been attracted to the lure, it is engulfed by a rapid gulp of the goosefish's huge mouth. The goosefish inhabits the coastal waters of the north-western Atlantic Ocean, from Canada to Florida, USA. It can reach a length of over 1.2 metres. It is a very popular food fish. Photographed in the Gulf of Maine, USA.
