Caption: Shortfin lionfish (Dendrochirus brachypterus) on the seabed. This predatory fish is found near coral reefs in rocky shallow lagoons of the Indo- Pacific region. It is nocturnal, emerging at night to feed on small crustaceans. Its decorative fins conceal venomous spikes that are used to defend itself against predators. It reaches 17 centimetres in length. Photographed in the Red Sea, Egypt.
