Caption: Common midwife toad. (Alytes obstetricans almogavarii). This toad is found throughout Europe and Northwest Africa. Its name is derived from the male's habit of carrying the fertilized eggs on its back. When the eggs are due to hatch, the male carries the eggs into the water where the tadpoles can emerge.
