Caption: Common toad. (Bufo bufo) swimming in a pond. This toad is found throughout Europe and Asia. It spends most of its time on land although the female returns to water to lay her eggs. The adult can grow to 18cm in length and has a warty green or brown skin. It feeds on insects, larvae, slugs and worms. To defend itself against predators it secretes a toxic substance called bufagin.
