Caption: Hatching turtle. Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) hatchling emerging from its egg. These eggs are in a protected hatchery. They are left to hatch naturally and then taken to the sea to be released. The next day the nests are dug out and any unhatched eggs are counted. Turtles are wholly aquatic reptiles, the females only coming ashore to lay their eggs. The loss of nesting beaches and the effects of hunting and pollution have endangered some turtle species. Photographed in Turtle Island Marine Park, Pulau Gulisan, Sabah, Malaysia.
