Caption: African rock python (Python sebae) eating a duiker (subfamily Cephalophinae). This snake can grow to a length of nine metres and weigh over 100 kilograms. It has heat-sensing pits in its mouth for detecting warm-blooded prey, such as this duiker, which it kills by constriction. Prey is ingested head first. After feeding, the python may not need to eat again for many weeks. P. sebae lives in savannah and forest habitats, often by rivers and lakes. Photographed in Mala Mala, South Africa.
