Bouncing ball. Stroboscopic photograph of a bouncing tennis ball. The trajectory of the bounce closely approximates to a parabola. Strobe photography may be used to analyses the dynamics of the bouncing ball; it may be shown that the horizontal speed is almost constant whilst the vertical speed is similar to simple periodic motion. The height of each parabola drops according to the energy lost each time the ball hits the ground - this is described by the coefficient of restitution between ground and ball.
