Caption: Orang-utan. Historical artwork of an orang-utan (Pongo pygmaeus) pulling down a branch in order to reach an apple. Orang-utans are solitary animals. Although their name originated from the Malay meaning "forest-man", they are the most distantly related great ape to man. The orang-utan is the only truly arboreal (tree-dwelling) great ape and is also the largest tree-dwelling mammal. Long arms, great strength and grasping feet make them well adapted for living and moving around in trees. This illustration is taken from a book published in 1778.
