Caption: Albino gorilla. Head and shoulders of an albino lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla). Lowland gorillas live in forests in western equatorial Africa. They are the largest of the primates, and may reach a height of over two metres when standing up. Adults spend the majority of their time on the ground, although young gorillas enjoy climbing trees. They live in groups of as many as 30 individuals, led by a dominant male. Groups have a rigid social hierarchy. They are mainly vegetarian, eating fruits and leaves. They are a gentle ape, contrary to many reports. Albinism, as seen here, is a lack of pigment in the skin, hair and eyes. Gorillas are usually black.
