Caption: Orang-utans. Baby Bornean orang-utan (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus) being held by its mother. A single baby is born after an eight month gestation. It remains with its mother for about four years. Orang-utans are arboreal great apes which inhabit the forests of Borneo and Sumatra. They are completely adapted to life in the trees, and rarely descend to the ground. Orang-utans reach maturity after about ten years, and can live to thirty years old. Apart from mothers and their young, orang-utans are solitary animals, and meet only to mate. Photographed on Borneo.
