Caption: Orang-utan. Sumatran orang-utan (Pongo pygmaeus abelii) resting. The orang-utan is an arboreal great ape which inhabits the forests of Borneo and Sumatra. It is completely adapted to life in the trees, and rarely descends to the ground. It is a solitary animal, meeting others only to mate, although females and their young may stay together for several years. An adult male is always solitary, but does not seem to have a defined territory, and never fights other males. The orang-utan eats fruits, flowers and leaves. It may live for 30 years, although such ages are rare in the wild.
