Caption: Young Bornean orang-utan (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus). This ape inhabits the forests of Borneo and is the largest tree-dwelling mammal. Under favourable conditions it breeds every four years, producing a single offspring after an eight month gestation. The child is carried hanging from its mother's stomach until the age of one, when it rides on her back. It remains with its mother, occasionally in a small group of females and offspring, for four years. As adults, the male and female rarely mix aside from during mating. The orang-utan's diet consists mainly of fruit. It is an endangered species. Photographed in Borneo.
