Caption: Mountain gorilla (Gorilla gorilla beringei) male. Mature males such as this one develop a large patch of grey hair on their backs; they are sometimes termed "silverbacks". Mountain gorillas are threatened by habitat destruction, poaching and war, making them highly endangered. They are found on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes between Rwanda, Uganda and Zaire. Their diet consists mainly of roots, leaves and stems, supplemented by occasional fruit, fungi, and invertebrates. They can reach over two metres in height. Photographed in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda.
