Caption: Long-eared bat. Coloured X-ray of the skeleton of a long-eared bat, Plecotus auritus. The elongated bones of the arms and fingers have evolved to form a skin-covered wing. The hindlimbs have clawed feet that are used to support the body when hanging upside down. The bat has a tail. Long ears (not seen) are used for echolocation, in which a high-pitched series of sounds are emitted by the bat and reflected off the environment to determine the position of objects. On either side of the base of the skull, in the inner ear, can be seen large coiled cochlea used for echolocation. Plecotus auritus feeds on insects. It is distributed widely in caves throughout Europe.
