Caption: Common long-tongued bat. High-speed photograph of a common long-tongued bat (Glossophaga soricina) feeding from the nectar of a red flower. The long- tongued bat has a specially adapted long tongue covered with hair-like papilla. This helps it to lap up nectar from flowers. These bats will also feed on fruit and insects. They are active by night and are noisy and fast flying. During the day they roost in caves, tunnels and buildings. Quite often these bats will form colonies of several hundred members. Bats are the only mammals that are capable of sustained flight.
