Caption: Bat hairs. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of hairs from Daubenton's bat (Myotis daubentonii). Each hair shaft has an outer cuticle made up of overlapping scales, or plates. The plates are thought to prevent the hairs from matting together. Magnification: x1900 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
