Caption: Tassel-eared squirrel. View of a black tassel- eared squirrel (Sciurus aberti) feeding on the inner bark of a ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa). This squirrel is also known as 'Abert's squirrel' and is found mainly in coniferous forests. It will build its nest in pine trees and will feed on the new wood of tender young pine cones. It will also eat mushrooms and fungi. A fully grown tassel-eared squirrel has a body weight of up to 900 g and a body length of up to 30 cm. They are found in the southwestern United States and Mexico. Photographed in Boulder County, Colorado, USA.
