Caption: Mouse with mousetrap. House mouse (Mus musculus) examining a mousetrap baited with cheese. This rodent lives in human settlements, feeding on any food available. Although it does not pose a great threat to human health, it contaminates food with its droppings and can also carry several diseases, including murine typhus and bubonic plague. The house mouse builds its nest in storage areas or any hidden place that is near to food. It breeds rapidly, females producing 5-10 litters of around 5-6 offspring every year. It is a quick runner, an agile jumper and a good swimmer. Although it is also found living wild in fields and wooded areas, it rarely strays far from buildings.
