Caption: White-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) standing on moss. White-footed mice are nocturnal and live in the forests, grassland and bushy areas of eastern, southern and central USA. During spring they eat seeds, fruits and insects. During the winter months, insects, spiders and centipedes make up most of their diet. White-footed mice store food for the winter months and carry supplies to their nests in cheek pouches. They are the prey of owls, snakes and weasels. This mouse is one of the main carriers of the tick that harbours the Lyme disease bacterium.
