Caption: Woodchuck, or groundhog, (Marmota monax) standing in grass. This rodent lives in woods and farmland in Canada and north-eastern USA. It can attain a body length of 45-60 centimetres. It is a very vocal animal, and gives a loud shrill whistle when alarmed. The woodchuck is hunted by wolves, coyotes, hawks and owls. It is a herbivore, eating fruit and vegetables, grass, berries and cereals. It is labelled an agricultural pest because it feeds on crops. It is mainly active in the day, and is a solitary animal. It hibernates during the winter in a burrow.
