Caption: Capybara (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris). This animal is the largest rodent in the world, measuring up to 130 centimetres in length and weighing up to 80 kilograms. It inhabits dense vegetation near water in South America, east of the Andes. It has webbed feet and is a proficient swimmer. When threatened it flees to the water and hides beneath it, often with only its nostrils above the water. The capybara is a social animal, living in groups numbering around 20 individuals. It is herbivorous, mainly grazing on grasses, but also eating aquatic plants, grains and fruits. Photographed in the Amazon rainforest, Ecuador.
