Caption: Grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) eating a peanut. The grey squirrel is native to the woods of eastern North America, but was introduced to the UK in the early 20th century. Since then, it has displaced the native red squirrel population to such an extent that the red squirrel is absent in many areas, and the only healthy populations are in conifer forests in Scotland. The grey squirrel has adapted well to life in urban areas, even in large cities, where it scavenges for food as well as eating its natural diet of nuts, seeds, fruits and bulbs. Photographed in London, UK.
